I haven't spent much time in recent years with Bernie but he was fun loving and humerous to be around at family gatherings for special events. He helped raise two beautiful daughters who grew into very competent and assured adults for which he can be proud. He will be missed by his family.

We 'inherited' Bernie from sister Betty after she passed away in 2005. They were extremely close, and Bernie never missed placing flowers at Betty's gravesite or burning a candle in his home to commemorate her birthday every year.
Bernie was a loner and an 'old spirit' who loved American history, particularly colonial times, and who for many years participated in Rendezvous gatherings celebrating those times. He could be exasperatingly stubborn and difficult--the 'Kraut' in him! Bernie was also obsessively independent and hated asking anyone for anything and did so ONLY when he had no other choice--which wasn't very often. But he was always there for us, in big and countless little ways; always a loyal and caring friend.
We already miss Bernie dearly. But we will never forget him...
Auf Wiedersehn , Dear Friend!

We, especially Donna and Sharon, have lost a very important person. Bernie was an old soul who enjoyed American Indian history and loved being in the mountains of PA and especially living on the "Hollow" as he always said. He found peace and comfort there. I knew Bernie when I was only 17 and we had two beautiful daughters who were there for him when he needed them the most. He was so proud of their accomplishments in life and all their help while he was ill even though it was hard for him to express how he felt. He will be missed dearly but he is in a better place, Bernie rest in peace beside your mother. Love Pat (Mom)

Dear Daddy,
I know you can't see this, but it makes me feel better to put it out there to the world . . . You never realized how good and rare a person you were or what a truly great father you were. So humble. You didn't give us money or material things, but there were so many life lessons I've learned from you that I will never forget. Those were the hard things to teach. But you really did just by being yourself. You knew what life was really about. Not many do, but I hope I can make you proud and honor your legacy for the rest of my days.

My dear old friend, I just found out about your passing this morning. I know we had lost touch over the past few years, I guess we're both pretty stubborn krauts. I'm sorry to learn you had to go through that illness, I know how you feel about doctors, I am just glad that you sought treatment and tried. I cannot begin to count all the ways you changed my life for the better, the important things you taught me and my family about the simple pleasures in life being the best. So many memories we shared, twenty-six years worth. Our deepest condolences to the family and friends, and we are so sorry that this is such a belated note. Bernie, you were quite a man, a real someone who stood out from the crowd. Glad you didn't spend too much time in that stuffy hospital at the end there. God is good.

Bernie was an amazing person and I will miss him. I feel very lucky to have known Bernie; not just as my father-in-law but as a friend, always there when you needed a helping hand and just fun to spend time with. I smile in the memory of all the great times spent at his camp; the campfires, his collection of vintage firearms, "baby" the tractor, “sweet lips the famous cannon, and of course his talent to build and fix anything. And the interesting places we visited nearby such as; the county jail museum where he donated much of his time helping others restore, the Kinzu bridge and the Zippo plant, just to name a few. How can we forget the many canoe & Kayak trips down the Delaware River, camping on Rogers Rock by Lake George, visiting Bernie at the “Rendezvous and countless shared stories about American history. He was truly one of a kind. Although Bernie is no longer with us physically, he will always be with us all in our hearts. We love you Bernie. Glenn.
