Remembering Joan Nelson - from Jan Anderson Weaver;
My Aunt Joan has often been in my thoughts, most frequently during canning season. Aunt Joan and Grandma Switzer, along with my Mom (Jean Switzer) made an annual event of canning peaches and pears together. Joan and Grandma would bring the produce to our house, and Jean would set the canning pots to boiling – we cleaned, pitted and processed what seemed to me a ton of fruit. While the kettles filled with canning jars boiling, Joan and Jean would retreat to the piano in our living room, and muse over their favorite selections they had collected from old hymnals. The experience of spending a day with these two sisters, and their mother sharing recipes, stories, and a cup of tea, provided me with an example for life, and cherished memories. At the end of the day, and boxes packed tightly with canning jars of fruit for the winter, we knew the reward of this day’s work would last until next canning season. My favorite recipe in my collection is still Joan Nelson’s “Impossible Pie”! My cousins; Mike, Tom, Yvonne, and Steve are blessed for Aunt Joan’s wisdom, love and talents to guide them through life, along with a bounty of canned peaches and pears for the winter.
